The Giant Panda's diet not only consists of bamboo they also hunt for meat like insects and rodents and sometime fish. However this 'meat' diet is only 1% of the pandas main diet the rest is still bamboo. Therefore this reliance on bamboo make them vulnerable to any loss of their habitat which unfortunately is their current and main threat.
Threat
Main threat:
The cause of the significant drop of the panda population is all due to human activities. Farming and forestry have eliminated large tracts of the bamboo which is the food source of the giant panda. Therefore it is hard for the giant panda to find food during winter and make them unable to care for their young, which increases the death rate and mortality rate of pandas.
Other threat:
Not only human activities contribute to the drop of the panda population. Diseases are also have a huge impact on pandas. The common diseases that affect pandas include: acute gastritis (inflammation or swelling in the lining of the stomach), cold and pneumonia (infections of the lungs). Moreover the most threatening diseases for giant panda are sunstroke, ileus (blockage of intestine), volvulus (an obstruction caused by twisting of the stomach or intestine) and kidney failure.
